Youth Transportation

Accessible transportation creates access to resources and opportunities, especially for youth, whose development relies on education, enrichment, and mentorship. Team Up is developing collaborative solutions to help mitigate this systemic barrier for children and youth in La Plata County.

2024 Transportation Survey

After identifying that transportation is the second greatest barrier to youth participation in out-of-school activities in La Plata County, Team Up conducted a survey of parents and caregivers during Spring 2024 to develop a deeper understanding of the scope of the barrier for families. After gathering information from parents and caregivers far and wide, we are using this incredible data to inform how programs, organizations, and local agencies can work together to kick-start community-driven solutions. After discovering a large gap in public awareness of existing transportation resources, we’ve begun compiling up-to-date information on our local transportation options to support youth and families. Keep scrolling to access these resources!

Summer Youth Transportation Pilot Project

After running a summer scholarship program for two summers, Team Up found that even without cost being a barrier, many youth couldn’t attend summer activitiesdue to transportation.

That’s when we decided to get creative: bringing together two transportation providers and 7 different youth-serving orgs to collaborate on getting our rural youth to/from summer programming. Working with Road Runner Transit and the Hive, we coordinated two summer-long bus routes serving youth from Ignacio, Bayfield, and rural Durango by getting them safely to/from summer programming at the Powerhouse, the Boys and Girls Club of LPC, Dancing Spirit, Seed Studio, San Juan Mountains Association, Manna Culinary Program, and the Hive DGO.

We are already planning how to improve and expand this project to better serve our youth and families next summer!
